Guild Wars 2 - Developer Diary

Normally I keep my news to Xbox 360 - partially because thats where I spend most of my gaming these days, but to be completely honest its mostly because keeping up with ALL the news is pretty tough to do - sometimes I can’t even keep up with simply the xbox 360 stuff.  In any event I used to play Guild Wars (and actually recently reinstalled it).  So it was interesting to read some information of a sequel.  Official press text to follow

“Every great game starts with a simple question: What do we want to play next? If you aren’t passionate about the game you’re working on, it is already doomed to mediocrity. And the best way to make sure you’re passionate? Make something you want to play.

For the team at ArenaNet, the idea of making Guild Wars 2 started with a single conversation about all the things we wanted to do in the next Guild Wars® campaign. Very quickly it became clear that we could move the game forward by leaps and bounds . . . but only if we were willing to rebuild it from the ground up.”

-James Phinney, Lead Designer of Guild Wars 2

A new developer diary from Guild Wars 2 lead designer James Phinney is now available at NCsoft’s “Dev Corner” on its PlayNC site (http://www.plaync.com/us/devcorner/). In his blog post, Phinney describes what ArenaNet hopes to accomplish with its highly anticipated sequel to the hugely successful Guild Wars franchise.

Prior to his role as design team lead for Guild Wars, Phinney started his game development career as a programmer at Chaos Studios, which later became Blizzard Entertainment. At Blizzard he worked on Warcraft II and Diablo, then as lead designer and producer on StarCraft. Phinney also wrote the story and dialogue for Shiny Entertainment’s Sacrifice.

The Guild Wars franchise of online roleplaying games has sold over four million units in just over two years. Guild Wars: Eye of the North™ is the first expansion for the subscription-free franchise and features new characters, Heroes, items, and story content accessible to players who own any existing Guild Wars campaign. Eye of the North is now available at the Guild Wars In-Game Store, the PlayNC store (https://store.plaync.com), and at many retail locations. For more information, please visit www.guildwars.com.
