Another Week Flys By

I dont know if its the season, the fact that I am keeping myself busy, the number of games being released recently, or what but I am just sitting here somewhat in awe that it is all ready Thursday, and then even more baffled that its almost November.  So I guess its time to just brain dump about what’s doing!

Ymiris, Antediluvia, and I threw together another episode of the friendcast - episode 12, one of our longest episodes to date.  Don’t let that fool you that probably means I didn’t cut enough of my babbling out :)

I have been kicking around some ideas to leverage the GamerDNA Helix APIs - nothing specific yet, I have a few ideas bouncing around but as usual I am struggling with making something pleasing to the eyes from the data available, but also what would be useful for others to use, etc - let’s see if i ever get something cranked out.

Speaking of GamerDNA things seem pretty busy for everyone there - even I have been keeping my hands pretty full of code for a bit now with various tasks as we push forward.  One of the biggest things I have had my hands in thus far for the site is the new Group Signatures - go check them out I am pretty pleased with the product so far and we continue to make it better.  Don’t be fooled the graphics are products of Zel - you know pretty and I almost always clash.

Other than that I have been keeping busy gaming - mostly just Rock Band 2 and Warhammer Online.  Though it seems my gaming time has been lacking as my Xbox’s mood badge has gone down substantially on 360voice, and my Alt Order character for Warhammer is closely catching my main character in level.  Which I have only played 2 nights for a few hours - its kind of a scheduled one night a week character with a couple friends.

Oh I believe I forgot to mention this, for those of you using my 360VoiceAPI plugin you might like to know that there is someone who has taken the project and copied plans to enhance it so keep an eye out for the new features he has promised in future versions.

Vanished for a weekend

So this past weekend I was (almost) completely off the grid.  Ironically I did take my laptop with me out of habbit but I just took the weekend to relax and spend time with the family (and some friends).  My wife and I took the kids down to visit their uncle Leo, but the main reason for the trip was a shopping trip for the wife at the new Philadelphia outlets.  We left with quite a few shopping bags, and much less money in the bank account - but we are trying to do our part in fixing this wonderful economy….or maybe my wife just likes to shop you decide.

On Saturday night I got to have a few drinks with some friends and try out Rock Band 2 - it’s amazing how the game really hasn’t changed that much - but perhaps that is a good thing.  I remember the backlash from people when Guitar Hero put in the battles when progressing through the tour - so perhaps this a smarter approach.  They did however fix one thing that bothered me from day one, you can now play with bands over live - so no more forcing people into your house just to get all those band tour achievements (which I do not have btw).

Finally got back sunday and then jacked everything back in - and tried to catch up on what i missed - but it was a nice little retreat, might have to go on another adventure with the kids for a weekend again soon - or as my son likes to call it “beecation”.

On a completely unrelated note - a few weeks before this trip the kids other uncle (my brother Tom) watched them for a night so the wife and I could go with some friends to see one of my favorite comics - Jim Norton.

It’s about that time

You know, that time when I look at my blog and realize the last post is getting close to a month old - so I feel guilty and/or obligated to come up with something worthy of writing about.  Which usually ends with a random rambling about whatever comes to mind at the time - if you are a loyal reader, this is nothing new to you.

So I got my Xbox 360 back after about a week, complete with a free month of xbox live gold.  So far so good, though it always seems to take a bit of time before the system goes down for the count - let’s hope this one survives.  I still haven’t finished Too Human, and I am actually at a point that is just completely annoying rather than interesting at all.  The game has had blocks of time like this off and on, which were not horrible but not great either.  It’s one of those places that you just repeatedly die over, and over, and over again - either I am underpowered, or just not playing right but either way its actually to the point of lowering my enjoyment of the game.  Luckily these areas come and go, and the whole game isn’t this way - or my personal opinion of the game would be quite a bit different.  Perhaps in co-op it would be a bit better, I do know that in the past I played co-op with a friend of mine and the portion we played actually seeemed almost too easy - so perhaps the game is really just geared towards co-op, but still a solo game should be balanced as well.

As I mentioned when posting about the death of my 360, I got Star Wars Force Unleashed on release day but barely have played it thus far- partially due to my xbox being on vacation and also juggling it in with some other games.  So far what I have played has been pretty enjoyable - and it was nice to see that the demo level was not exactly like a level in the full retail game, but rather sections of it to give you a feel for the game.  Even though I felt a bit of Deja Vue when playing through the areas that were in the demo - I didn’t feel like I was churning through the exact same level again.

I also have Pure - which I never have been that into this kind of game in the past, and I have to say I am pleasantly suprised by the game.  It is very similar to any other racer that you might have played, its not ground breaking or anything like that but its enjoyable and well done.  The customization of the ATVs goes right down to every little part - the only thing thats a bit strange is there is no cost in building or customizing the ATVs, as long as you have the items unlocked you can use them - guess I am just used to having some sort of cash cost in order to upgrade my vehicles.  I actually am working on a full review for the game to be posted in the near future so keep an eye out for that.

My biggest gripe with my most recent Xbox repair is I can no longer play Braid.  Whenever i boot up the game it starts as a trial version of the game, and this is true if I am or am not connected to live (most games will show full versions connected to live even if its not on the original console).  Unfortunately before this repair I all ready did the license swap which probably would fix up the problem - so I just have to wait and see if they just haven’t processed my games yet or something.  I was actually waiting to finish up the last couple levels in that game the whole time i was away - so this was a pretty big let down.  Hopefully it actually gets resolved soon.

Want to know what is a bad combo?

Picking up your preordered copy of Star Wars Force Unleashed even though you know your Xbox 360 sits at home waiting for a coffin.  Squidbox IV you had an ok life - a little over a year since you made your way to my home you will be missed, luckily Squidbox V should not be far away the only question is will he have a cousin named Squidstation I, before he gets here since ironically I have been reviewing and discussing the purchase of one recently - perfect timing.  I guess I shouldn’t have busted Ymiris‘ chops when his Elite took the RRoD dive - karma is a bitch.

I am sure my various projects will benefit from the loss of my little friend - I am cranking away at my GamerDNA bug fixes and enhancements faster than ever - and I even spent some time playing around with madden-stats complete with custom signatures.
